Temporary fencing for horses involves materials that are light weight yet very visible.  They are usually installed by the horse owner and can be easily moved.  We recommend these types of fences to be built on fiberglass or wood posts.  Steel posts should be avoided because of their grounding potential and risk of horse injury.  Life expectancy of these fences is usually about five years.  Wide tape materials provide the highest visibility but can be damaged by sustained winds.  In windy areas, the polyrope (Electro-Web Hot Rope or Electrobraid) is a better choice.

Permanent fencing for horses requires materials with a high degree of visibility and durability to withstand environmental exposure.  The high tensile wire commonly used in livestock fencing is coated to  give it visibility and safety in horse applications.  These coated materials can in some cases be electrified which produces a psychological as well as a physical barrier.  We believe the safest horse fence is one that is electrified because it creates a distance between the fence and horse which reduces the risk of injury.  We recommend that these fences be built on fiberglass or treated wood fence posts.  Steel posts should be avoided because of their grounding potential  and risk of horse injury.

*  The fence voltmeter is used to evaluate fence and energizer performance.  It measures voltage at any point on the fence line.  Without the voltmeter, it is virtually impossible to detect how well insulated and grounded your fence is and to determine energizer output.
